Writing prompt: Lost

Write about a time you were lost. Did someone find you or did you find your own way home again?

Writing prompt: Fear

What are you afraid of? We all have lots of fears but somewhere deep inside is a fear that you don't often (if ever) share with someone else. Give that fear to your character and write about it without ever telling the reader what that fear is.

Write on right now.

Writing prompt: Comfort Food

What was your comfort food as a child? Mine was creamy Jiff peanut butter on soft, white Wonder bread and slices of Del Monte sweet pickles. It still is. One bite and it takes me back to being 10 years old again.

What was your comfort food as a child? Do you eat it still? Does it still offer comfort?

Writing prompt: List Poem

List poems are great warm-ups to an actual writing session. This can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. Make a list of all the things you CAN'T remember.

Writing prompt:dialog

This excercise is best done with a tape that you can pause and rewind. You can tape a television show, a commerical or put in a movie. Turn the sound to OFF.

Watch for 5-10 minutes with your finger on the pause button. Watch, pause, then fill in the dialog on your own. If it is something you've seen before, try not to recreate what you think they said but come up with something new.

Write on right now.

Writing Prompt: Paying attention

Pick a color - green, blue, red, brown, whatever pops into your mind right now. Go around your room, your house, inside and outside and write down just one word descriptions of what you see that is JUST that color. If you're really ambitious you can try to record your color finds for an entire day. Later, when you are done collecting, reread what you have found then write.

Write on right now.

Writing Prompt: significant items

Pick one of these three pictures. Imagine that you carry this item with you in your pocket at all times. Why? Are you an adult or a child? Did you find it? Did someone give it to you? Do you let people know that you carry it with you or do keep it a secret?

Write on right now. Susan

Writing prompt: grandparents

Today's prompt comes from the book Room to Write by Bonni Goldberg.

Today begin with the word grandmother or grandfather and let the memories and associations serve as a tour guide. Examine what surfaces. Is it mostly character description, story, history, opinion, or something else?

Write on right.
